The Haywards Ethos

The Bat & Ball Country Pub, and Haywards Restaurant

Newpound-Wisborough Green

Founded in 1777, Hall & Woodhouse has rich history and the heritage, making it a family-known name to this day. Hall & Woodhouse started off as a regional brewery in Dorset, initiated by Charles Hall, under the name Ansty Brewery. The Hall & Woodhouse partnership began life in 1847, when Charles’ son, Robert Hall, went into business with George Woodhouse.

Ten years later, the famous badger character began appearing in the logo and Hall & Woodhouse began brewing under the name Badger Brewery. Over the years, Hall & Woodhouse began opening pubs across England and brewing such favourites as Tanglefoot and Fursty Ferret.

Today, Hall & Woodhouse operates over 250 public houses and The Bat & Ball Country Pub and Haywards Restaurant are proud to be part of that legacy. Based in our 16th century hostelry in Wisborough Green, we keep the spirit of Hall & Woodhouse alive with our traditional approach to everything we do.

The Haywards Ethos

Whilst we love maintain traditions, this doesn’t mean we don’t keep our eye on modern food trends and ways of cooking. Our ethos towards food is simplicity and freshness, which is achieved by using only the best seasonal produce.

Fresh and local produce finds a home in all our recipes. Not only can you taste the difference, you can rest assured you are receiving food that is ethically sourced from sustainable suppliers. This applies to our fish too. We only use fresh fish caught from sustainable sources and this approach to fishing will ensure that the stocks in our seas will be there for the future.

During our life as Haywards at Hurtwood, we built up a reputation for incredible food, and this is something we are very proud of. We have brought this same passion for good food and customer happiness with us to The Bat & Ball and we will continue to improve and innovate when it comes to our menu. The restaurant offers a modern British and Mediterranean fair and our famous traditional Sunday lunch.

Visitors can be assured of a warm welcome too, be it for just a coffee, a drink, a bite to eat or the full dining experience to celebrate that special occasion. Come and enjoy real ale, sensational wines from our carefully selected cellar, premium lagers and cider and of course our new menu, which will consist of both locally sourced and seasonal ingredients.

We aim to indulge your culinary desires, by providing an extravaganza of food that reflects your individual personality and taste. Imaginative menus and exquisite presentation ensure that your visit will be a celebration to remember!
